The Royal Wedding

Just watched the royal wedding on television at my friend's place. I was amazed by the number of people on the streets of London to attend this wedding ceremony and the estimation of two billion people (almost 30% of the world's population)--quite an astonishing figure to me. The media also put a lot of coverage onto this royal wedding. Through Facebook and Twitter, people were discussing about every detail about it from the ring, all the different kinds of hats or the whole ceremony.

Then I started to wonder why so many people were showing great interest in this? Personally for me, it was because it was another fairy tale story come true story and also a great way to see how the culture came into the play this grand ceremony. For others, maybe it was because among all the news about the recent earthquake disaster in Japan and the military turbulence in Libya, this was a cheerful stories at least. This was a positive news after all. But what else? Why not other royal weddings are attracting so many attention from the world? Though Britain was no longer the powerful monarch anymore, it still exerts influence. The cultural and the symbolic value of the royal families are there. It is deeply rooted into the history and culture itself. After all, this ceremony may also bring some excitement to the coming 2012 Olympic in London.
